"The Weekend" Why does one city flourish in talent when others don’t? Is it the way they are nourished in school and church? When you see the number of notable people who come from the small city of Goldsboro, North Carolina you’d be surprised. Actor Andy Griffiths, singer Scott Stapp (Creed), numerous NFL and MLB players and keyboardist/producer/ composer Nicholas Cole. Having played piano and organ since he was four in church, this determined musician began creating his first album with the help of his dad in their home studio. The Weekend (out 9/13) is his third album and features label mate guitarist Chieli Minucci on the soothing lead off single ‘ Soulmate'. My “summer song” of 2019 captivates you with its hypnotic intro of synth, Chieli's licks and a impressive drumbeat. The combination of smooth beats and acoustic guitar makes another appearance on the track ‘Should’ve Been Us’ with guitarist Kay-ta Mutsano and his Peter White sounding riffs. American Idol fifth season finalist Elliott Yamin delivers an outstanding performance on Michael Jackson’s 'P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)' and new upcoming singer Satyr Black (check out her version of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ on Soundcloud) contributes her Janet Jackson sounding vocals to the opening ‘Recall’. His influences range from Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire and contemps like keyboardist Brian Culbertson. Nicholas openly admits to the influence of keyboardist Brian Culbertson on his releases with Brian’s style of irresistible melodies and song structure that are both uplifting and spiritual. Nicholas once said “I really wanted to write and play music that came from the heart. God gave me the gift to play, and so naturally I write and play music that comes from a very spiritual place as if it’s put on my heart and I am given the opportunity to express it. There is a deep connection between jazz and gospel and while the album is predominantly a contemporary jazz project, I incorporate a lot of gospel riffs and chord progressions”. Spend a weekend with Nicholas Cole and you’ll find yourself pressing play again and again. ”
